Lingerie: Back In Black

Black is back and with a vengeance. The color black has been known as the ultimate dark color for a long time. Looking backwards though, black lingerie was not always so popular. Before 1920, the predominant lingerie color was white. After the 1920 s other colors started to appear in the lingerie world such as light pastels. Women and men took a fancy to the enhanced color range and this eventually led to the many and varied colors of lingerie that we enjoy today.

Black is like the night, absent of all color. In clothing as well as in lingerie, black makes you look thinner and slimmer. Many dark colors including black seem to make a space shrink in size. Even the most highly illuminated room may look quite dark when decorated with loads of black.

The silhouette of a female has been a powerful force throughout the ages and is still used in many ways today to seduce, entice and arouse. Silhouettes and sexy lingerie work in the same way. The silhouette is pleasantly appealing to the eye, showing enough to please your mind, but leaving enough room for your imagination to fill in the missing information with your own unique and arousing thoughts.

Black is often described as the negation of color or the lack of all color. Black can be used in conservative or radical settings both. Black matches well with almost all other colors except for other dark colors. Its connotations are not always readily perceived and understood. It can be mysterious and sexy as well as conventional or sophisticated.

Other colors often appear brighter than they are when in the presence of black. In most Western countries black is the color of mourning and death in most of the Western countries while white is the color of death and mourning in most Eastern countries.
Black is regularly viewed as a color of rebellion to youngsters around the globe. In early Western movies, bad guys always wore black while the good guys were decked out in all white. This eventually changed as the good guys started wearing black to make them more mysterious and appealing.

When dressing in very dark colors you must be careful when wearing black because when the colors are too dark, they tend to blend together. Colors that are bright such as red, green and yellow go well with black. Black can make most bright colors literally pop out at you.

The different shades of black are often referred to as ebony, midnight, coal, jet, raven, charcoal, sable, onyx, ink, obsidian, soot and raven.

The diversity of black allows it to represent style, formality, power, elegance, sophistication, wealth, mystery, and modernity while at the same time representing fear, death, evil, anonymity, mourning, sadness, remorse, unhappiness and anger.
