Deciding if a Degree in Criminal Justice is Right for You
by friendsandmoney.co.uk
All of us can relate to having been a victim of crime in some capacity, but have you ever wondered what causes people to break the law or how different forms of crime could be prevented?
Criminal Justice is a fascinating area of study which encompasses such a breadth of subjects which offer excellent research opportunities.
A key element of Criminal Justice is the dynamic nature of the theoretical and practical models that underpin the learning framework given that it is directly influenced by public opinion, governmental politics and academic research. There are many questions that the many facets of criminal justice wrestle with on a daily basis including;
- Is punishment more important that rehabilitation?
- To what extent should the human rights of the offender outweigh those of potential victims?
- Does labelling offenders as criminals increase their risk of further re-offending?
- Is the death sentence an important tool in deterring criminality or a cruel form of retribution?
Given all of these competing ideologies it is hardly surprising that Criminal Justice is such an exciting area to study as rarely is there such an opportunity to examine the impact of current opinion upon day to day criminal behaviour. The fact that Criminal Justice covers such a varied range of areas from Policing, Probation and Prisons to Restorative Justice and empowering the local community, enables individuals from any background to relate to the subject matter. Before you doubt whether you have the skills and experience to study this subject just remember that factors like age, ethnic background, social upbringing, religious or faith based values and gender are invaluable to the Criminal Justice community, as they enable it to better represent the values of the people that it both serves and protects.
A Criminal Justice degree should be a first choice of study for all those who value difference, enjoy continually developing new skills and are passionate about reducing crime and protecting potential victims.
